Mechanics are a standard character achetype in the game! One of the iconic example characters is one!

What do they do in the 20s? Plenty! Cars are new. The Ford Model T is still the most common car on the road. Airplanes are newer. Planes that can fly across the Atlantic reliably are still 10 years off (which is, of course, why another of the example characters has one).

And the ultimate purpose of mechanics in pulp? It's PULP. You can use your Engineering skill to make gigantic Radium Projectors or Transformers or such. There's even Weird Science and Mad Science stunts, letting you build shit that's right wacky.

Also, you bash in skulls with a monkey wrench. Which in combat is just as effective as a broadsword or firearm. Because it's pulp!

Hmmm. I'm still more comfortable with things I know at least a little about. That's why my original idea for apathy_games was a journalist. Mind you, I loved Tom's employment interview. "You do realise I just made all those terms up, right?" "Well, yeah, but... if the ship DID have an OMGWTF drive, I'd totally repair it with an orly lever."
