Another day, another few bits and pieces of learning.

Today's introductions were for resource maintenance and for teamwork. I'm not going to say much about the teamwork one, since I doubt it's really anything truly special.

Resource maintenance, on the other hand, is scary. Yes, scary. It involves deliberately getting books wet, just to show that we can dry them out properly - and that bit comes in the next few weeks. [livejournal.com profile] slammerkinbabe, when I'm told all about the apparently-proper way of getting water out of a monograph I'll post at length, just in case you lose another book to the sink.

...

I just used the word monograph. In a sentence. Without realising. This, on day 3.

The worst part of the day was coming home, since I did so a bit later than I'd planned to. This is the first time I've had to catch one of their 'new' late buses, which are apparently 'flexible'. 'Flexible' seems to mean that a particularly grumpy bus driver points out that you just press the button, when it's stopping time. 'Flexible' also means that I get off another 200+ metres from home.

And did I mention the rain? The heavy and appropriately wet rain?

Well, there was rain. And it was heavy, and it was soggy, and so I ran because the TV said you get less wet.

I doubt it mattered much.

I'll bet that whoever designed this new system of 'flexible' bus routes is sitting at home right now, praising themselves for being exceptionally intellect.

The rain came with a side of lightning! And this lightning killed all the TV. No House. No Spicks & Specks. No Glass House, but with luck it'll be repeated very late on Friday. Rar! Silly weather, stopping the signal like that.

Lastly, I'm considering buying an MP3 player when I can afford to do so. I was originally considering things not-Apple, but a conversation with [livejournal.com profile] raptor_au gave me cause to rethink that. And the sheer size of the cute and tiny black nano. So! People with modern MP3 players: who made yours, what model is it, and which one do you wish you had instead?

DAMN YOU LIGHTNING. It's a good episode - you MUST see it on Friday.

I have an iPod mini, it's made by Apple, and I wish I had one that works.

Well, you're certainly a font of nothing. *makes note to buy a working MP3 player*

:D

I have a Rio Karma, which has been with me for the past year and a half, and I love it dearly. It's bigger than an iPod, but bigger = less likely to snap in half in my purse, so this is a plus, really. And, when I bought it, it was cheaper.

Sometimes I wish I had an iPod, but that's just because everyone has one and it has all those nifty little accessories; this one is short on fun goodies.

iPods are overpriced fashion accessories for trendwhores, IMNSHO.

My player is a cheap little Curtis 256mb model. It was very cheap, is very small... but it serves my purposes well.

Do some comparison shopping... my ex's husband got a nice SanDisk Sansa 1gb model this past Holiday Season, and he's very pleased with it. It also accepts SD cards (like many cameras) for added memory (and quick changing of what's loaded on it). He's very picky about his music and thusfar is extremely pleased with it.

It was also only 2/3rds the price of a comparable iPod Shuffle. If I were to go for something larger than I have now, I'd probably go for that, or something similar.

The iRiver 800 series is durable, inexpensive, plays MP3, WMA, and most importantly OGG. It's USB, uses one AA battery, and is OS independent.

How much space does it offer, and how big is it?

iRiver iFP-899:
1GB
88.5(W) x 36.2(D) x 27.3(H)mm
40g

It'll also store and transfer any file type.

*visualises dimensions, with much handwaving*

That's... pretty big. It makes my DS look more freakishly tiny than it already is. :)

I have an iPod, and while it's given me a lot of trouble, I've recently discovered that much of this is due to my own stupidity in taking care of it. However, if you do get that, get the Apple Care Protection Plan, as you only pay for it once, but each time they replace your iPod, they extend it. It starts at a year, and mine was purchased in 2004, and it's up to a year and a half from now.

What did you do to it that aparently breaks them?

I dropped it down a flight of stairs once. The second time I used the piece that goes in the base charger-computer-hookup-thing in the iPod instead of the base, 'cause I didn't have the base, and that seems to have upset it as well. The new one's being wonderful so far though.

iPods are overpriced fashion accessories BUT it is that very quality which gives them such high resale value when you want to upgrade later. I have been very happy with my 4GB mini.

Deliberate getting-wet-of-books? I'd have run screaming. Unless they let me practise on Danielle Steel.

Deliberate getting-wet-of-books, then subsequent drying-of-deliberately-wet-books. It's better for teaching than, say, waiting for accidentally wet books, or for the campus library to flood.

I may find some secondhand Anne Rice. Disallow that. :)

You can do whatever you want with secondhand Anne Rice. Or firsthand Anne Rice for that matter. In fact, use holy water, just to be sure.

I have a Rio, and I am pissed because it broke because I dropped it. Onto a carpet. From about three feet. And it's the sport model.

So don't buy a Rio.

And while the shipping would be silly, I have a crapload of bodicerippers my mom gave me, "Because you like to read..." (The last word in that sentence should be 'tripe,' then, mom) that I wish you could practice on- the library won't take'em, all my friends have better taste than that, and I hate throwing books away, no matter how loathesome.

The best bit about that is that it's been scientifically shown that the men in bodicerippers would, in fact, be incapable of any actual bodice-ripping.

I have an iPod, made by Apple but I'm guessing you could have figured that out, and it's all old-preclickwheel!15gigs. It is shiny and makes me happy.

I have a Zen Micro -- I think it's 4GB (all I know is I've put over 600 songs in and it's not full yet). Its functioning improved considerably when I stuck rainbow stickers all over the case. I am an inveterate dropper of expensive things (usually my phone) and despite several droppings, the Zen has only lost the belt clip, which I never used anyway.

Details are here. I have the 4GB one in white, but only because I didn't get to pick the colour.
