As you may have gathered from my previous entry, there was snow! That's the first time ever I've had fluffy powdery bits of ice fall on me, and I'm still grinning in a somewhat mad fashion. Snow! Yay! I took my camera out and took photos (with a gap in the middle to, y'know, attach a lens and all), and then came back in and frantically wiped it dry, and took the film out and it's going to be developede yay tomorrow (but unfortunately I don't have a scanner) and then went back outside to be snowed on.

And that's a very long sentence. I suppose the short version is this: Wheee!

It's come to my attention through recent use of the win2k command line that, well, it sucks*. To this end, I finally got around to digging out my CD with the ports of things like ls, less and grep.

And, lastly, people seem to be mildly timid about commenting with linkyness or suggestions or such. Don't be. No comment is too random, no fun link too tangential, no book suggestion out of place.

*This may be because remembering about silly things like dir is now quite impossible for me.

I don't understand half of what's going on in this post, so: WHEE! Snow!

::high five::

Now I don't feel so silly.

The top bit is bits and pieces of what we talked about on AIM. The middle bit is all computery stuff, which some on my flist understand and others will be confused by. The last bit says I don't mind links or book suggestions or such.

the computery stuff is what got me. :(

The Win2k command line does suck. XP's is slightly better, in that they at least put in tab-completion (although it only works for files, not available commands). I tend to put ports of my favourite *nix commands on any Windows system that I'm forced to use.

Snow is only fun until it settles on the ground, melts and then refreezes overnight, leaving the ground coated in ice. It makes walking downhill very exciting, but not in a good way.

I hadn't gotten around to putting them on this one again, but then I decided that roguelike games are easiest to run from the command line, which was where things went a little wrong.

I normally end up putting them on because I want an SSH server for encrypted file transfer (all the Windows machines I use are for work purposes, so data security can be quite important).

Oh, and random linkiness: a friend of mine did a sort of m15m type thing of the War of the Worlds, which you might find amusing

I haven't seen the newest War of the Worlds as yet, but I'll keep it in mind if I do.

The first time? Heee. As long as you don't have to drive in it/shovel too much of it, it's muchly fun. Enjoy!

It was only for about half an hour. Mostly, you can't tell. There's a few spots that look like someone put a small explosive device in a bag of icing sugar, but even there it's thin and patchy.

More would be fun indeed.

Hee, the boulevard news on TV over here are all "OMG snow in Australia! However will they survive the...being snowed on? I mean,...erm...the stuff's cold! Stay tuned for more pictures of Melbourne being snowed on and us conveniently forgetting to mention this has, in fact, happened before. See Australians wearing long-sleeved things!"

Glad to hear you're enjoying your first snow! :)

Yay for fluffy ice, but it's been rather cold all day. By contrast, there's supposed to be an overnight low of -2°, which is far from scary for the rest of the world but merits warm thingies here.

Your icon is oddly appropriate. And makes me wonder just how many of your icons show animated death.

Not at all. Especially not where it has names written on, because I hear people get a bit narky about that.

*boggles* I can't imagine never having seen snow. I just can't. Snow has been a fact of my life for as long as I can remember, from six to eight months of the year. But then I can't imagine it being winter in August, either. Clearly my imagination is deficient. Or maybe I'm just an ice-blooded prairie girl with winter survival instincts hardwired into my nervous system.

Even I will admit that snow is one of the most beautiful things this planet has come up with. I'm glad you got a chance with it before it runs back to the parts of the world it's more familliar with.

*nods* I realise I'm being a shade irrational; some of Australia's more popular snowfields are all of an hour down the road. Still! It was pretty, and confused the furry residents.

AHA! You're either in Victoria or somewhere in Northern NSW or in the ACT itself.

Or possibly Tasmania, but how many famous ski resorts does that have? *shrug*
