1. Comment on this post.
  2. I'll choose six of your icons and kind of o.O at them.
  3. You'll explain what they mean, or why they exist, or why you use them.
  4. If you want to, post your answers and this explanation in your journal so others might play along.

Today's selection of icon!explanations was made by [livejournal.com profile] kittydesade.

This one comes from Sugarshock! issue 3, which I'll elaborate more on when I get to...

this one, which is also - oddly enough - from Sugarshock!, an online comic written by the Whedon and freely available from Dark Horse Presents, or: the only part of MySpace I'll ever, ever use. It's fun, it's ridiculous, and it's very... Joss? Jossy? Josslike? However you turn the Whedon into an adjective, it's that.

There are, according to some sources, Plans afoot for more Sugarshock! when the Joss has time.

Note that Sugarshock! is properly spelt with the exclamation mark, kind of like SplatterCon!!!

This one was an attempt at making a fun, seasonal icon, which would've originally involved just some kind of Cylon with a hat. The eye-sweepy thing comes free with every Cylon raider (limited numbers! order now!), so the hat-sweepy thing seemed like an amusing follow-on from that.

I may or may not remake it with a centurion at some point.

This one was really just for fun, and was one of the three Serenity gag reel icons that I made (the others being the 'TRAP!' and 'fucking fly' ones). I've been told it looks like Mal goes over to get a new Inara every few seconds; it was entirely accidental, but quite fun.

This one was an idea that I had one day while doing something completely unrelated. And, once that had happened, I just wanted to see if I actually could make it like I wanted within the 40k limit. It took five different attempts - each time I gave up for anywhere from five minutes to an hour, but by the end of the fifth one the icon was made.

And then surprisingly popular - not in an 'I expected people to hate it' sense, but instead a little bit of surprise at the flood of 'OMGICONCANIHAVEITANDUSEITPLEASEPLEASEPRETTYPLEASE'.

And this one was the product of... um, random chance? I think I may have seen something that somehow related to Whitman somewhere, remembered the yawp thing, and then wondered how it'd work for a pirate. And a fo'c'sle can be as good as a roof, so. Icon.

Well, perhaps if I haven't scared off your n00b up there, the political debate will be interesting. Until then, this will help fill the time.

1: That icon pretty much sums me up. Apparently to a decent number of people, I am indeed "wicked cool" in various and sundry ways. Despite this, I continue to fail at life, on a very consistent and regular basis. No matter how much effort, planning and good intention I put into things, they go sour on me. Typically within a year, often less. Doesn't matter if this is a relationship, housing situation, job, hobby, friendship, craft, whatever. It always goes bad, and it's always directly my personal fault to some extent. Pretty much, I am fail.

2: Who doesn't love Tetris? This icon sums up how all of us feel, all of the time, while playing. It's also a general commentary on life. No matter how much work you put into it, making all the pieces of your life fit together... it's ultimately pointless, and you'll probably screw it up anyways.

3: I've never been one to walk the path society follows. While I generally go along with them, I'm the one who walks to the side... along with the crowd, but not part of it. I just don't fit in, and my peculiarities will generate some shocked reactions now and then. This icon is the simplest explanation for that.

4: Come on, it's from the EMAIL! cartoon, need I say more? Well fine. Pretty much, it's an amusing and offbeat way of expressing a great deal of fondness and affection. It's not just generic "love" or "hugs" - it has MOUTH!

5: I'm a ninja fan. Nothing against pirates, but ninja are just better. Except for White Ninja, he doesn't count. He's part of our expertly crafted, webwide disinformation campaign. Not only do we discredit pirates by implying that they drink poison (who wants to join them now?) but we show off the badassitude of the ninja by showing White Ninja, completely unharmed by the poison he just consumed.

6: Jayne. Bohemian Rhapsody. Come on. Unlike #4, I actively refuse to explain this, because no explanation is necessary or possible.

2. ...well. Uplifting, that. :)

4. Actually, yes, you do need to say more.

5. And it's nothing against ninjas, but science has shown that pirates are cool. So there.

2: I know, isn't it? On one level, it's a funny tetris animation. On another, it's more existential angst than an entire concert of emo kids can come up with!

4: "More"

Happy now?

5: Pirates are cool, but ninja are cooler. And less STD-riddled.

I'll be happy when we've got everyone to join [livejournal.com profile] apathy_games for Lexicon, and there's a second genre poll posted. I can see to part of that later, unless you'd perhaps like to write the next poll now?

Re #1: we'd better stay far apart. I feel the same way, so if you put us in the same place, all the suckage would make Sunnydale look like a sinkhole...

Dude, you can't make my situation any worse. Just LOOK at all the relevant icons I already have.

Top that :p

See? My life still sucks more than you. Here I am, emoing along, and I have my (previously stolen) icons all ganked! It's not even like you'll credit them all as listed on my icons page, oh no.

Gankability

Well, I only ganked the one I used, and there was no credit there anyway :-)
