1. Comment on this post.
  2. I'll choose six of your icons and kind of o.O at them.
  3. You'll explain what they mean, or why they exist, or why you use them.
  4. If you want to, post your answers and this explanation in your journal so others might play along.

Today's selection of icon!explanations was made by [livejournal.com profile] kittydesade.

This one comes from Sugarshock! issue 3, which I'll elaborate more on when I get to...

this one, which is also - oddly enough - from Sugarshock!, an online comic written by the Whedon and freely available from Dark Horse Presents, or: the only part of MySpace I'll ever, ever use. It's fun, it's ridiculous, and it's very... Joss? Jossy? Josslike? However you turn the Whedon into an adjective, it's that.

There are, according to some sources, Plans afoot for more Sugarshock! when the Joss has time.

Note that Sugarshock! is properly spelt with the exclamation mark, kind of like SplatterCon!!!

This one was an attempt at making a fun, seasonal icon, which would've originally involved just some kind of Cylon with a hat. The eye-sweepy thing comes free with every Cylon raider (limited numbers! order now!), so the hat-sweepy thing seemed like an amusing follow-on from that.

I may or may not remake it with a centurion at some point.

This one was really just for fun, and was one of the three Serenity gag reel icons that I made (the others being the 'TRAP!' and 'fucking fly' ones). I've been told it looks like Mal goes over to get a new Inara every few seconds; it was entirely accidental, but quite fun.

This one was an idea that I had one day while doing something completely unrelated. And, once that had happened, I just wanted to see if I actually could make it like I wanted within the 40k limit. It took five different attempts - each time I gave up for anywhere from five minutes to an hour, but by the end of the fifth one the icon was made.

And then surprisingly popular - not in an 'I expected people to hate it' sense, but instead a little bit of surprise at the flood of 'OMGICONCANIHAVEITANDUSEITPLEASEPLEASEPRETTYPLEASE'.

And this one was the product of... um, random chance? I think I may have seen something that somehow related to Whitman somewhere, remembered the yawp thing, and then wondered how it'd work for a pirate. And a fo'c'sle can be as good as a roof, so. Icon.

For you:

Star. Madness. Chemistry (though I do get the joke therein). Technopeasant. Vegetable envy. Funky.

ImageThat's the emblem of the Order of the Eastern Star (http://www.easternstar.org), a fraternal service organization affiliated with Freemasonry. My wife was a Rainbow Girl (http://www.iorg.org/), and then a Star member: I joined Star so I could go to meetings with her.

ImageMadness: I've been a Rocky Horror fan for a while, and it tickles me when people are overly literal...

ImageChemistry: Sometimes, people are just too obnoxious/clueless...

ImageTechnopeasant: A while back, the head of the Science Fiction Writers of America complained about members having the audacity to give their work away, and used the above phrase as an analogy with ink-stained copyists of days of yore. Said members took exception, and organized International PSTP Day, where they all released work for free. [livejournal.com profile] dduane did this icon, and posted her story "Parting Gifts" on her site.

ImageVegetable envy: There were so many quotable lines in the Doctor Who Children in Need special, "Time Crash", the iconmakers will have work for months. :-) The 10th Doctor was ragging on the 5th Doctor for his lapel "decoration".

ImageFunky: Buffy the Vampire Slayer text meets Star Wars images. I can _so_ see Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson delivering those lines instead of Nick Brendon and Anthony Stewart Head...

Sucks like a horseshoe: The original quote is from the NaNoisms thread of (I think) NaNoWriMo 2006. Someone made this bizarre analogy and it caught on as the NaNoism of the year.

Sodomy Redskins: [livejournal.com profile] saikogrrl took the photo of the Redskins packet after we made the observation that it looked very much like the one Redskin was sodomising the other Redskin. Not an unusual observation coming from the two of us.

Viconia/Shar-Teel: I was going to write this whole big fanfic about how the two of them first met and developed an attraction towards each other and finally started sleeping together, but it got as far as a single PWP ficlet and this icon. Sigh.

Meles Cupcakea: One of the bazillion Hufflepuff icons I found through [livejournal.com profile] loyal_badger; [livejournal.com profile] gryps_celcus was experimenting with Latin, but I can't for the life of me remember what the alternative icons were. Other Latin names for various species of badger, I'd imagine.

Hibiscus: I love hibiscus-print anything. One of my beanbags is camo-print with hibiscuses on it. This was an excuse to experiment with different colours and filters and layers to make variations on this icon, and I liked this one best.

Ginny: [livejournal.com profile] bethyj made this one and posted it shortly after I first joined [livejournal.com profile] loyal_badger back in 2005 and I ganked it and have hung onto it ever since. It makes me laugh without fail.

See? My life still sucks more than you. Here I am, emoing along, and I have my (previously stolen) icons all ganked! It's not even like you'll credit them all as listed on my icons page, oh no.

Gankability

Well, I only ganked the one I used, and there was no credit there anyway :-)

1. This one was a product of [livejournal.com profile] ithurtsmybrain, forerunner of [livejournal.com profile] brain_asplode. I wrote a Sauron/Shepherd book drabble. There was tea. Naturally it required an icon. I use it as my default because I think it has just the right level of absurdity and hey - tea!

2. Hornblower. Also, hats. I think this is my random/cheerful icon, for the moment.

3. Also Hornblower! I keep it around for explosive references and occasionally sarcasm where my snark icon doesn't fit.

4. Ah, the cowsicle. [livejournal.com profile] woodburner googled steak for reasons unknown and came up with a picture of this statue in Europe somewhere. So she posted it on lj for people to O.o and of course I had to icon it because it was just so bizarre. I use it for bad-news posts, to sort of lighten the mood a bit - it's like a big exaggerated pout.

5. Discworld reference. Irony is always good.

6. Yet more Hornblower! This is a rotating spot for yay/well done/I like you icons. Currently inhabited by the saluting Lieutenant Bush.

5.

Hmm. If that can happen with one weird analogy, I wonder how long it'll be before NaNo starts having a theme item to include in the stories, kind of like Tropfest does with its films.

If ever I see a hedgehog with half a packet of Redskins impaled on its spines, I'll know why.

And, whee, shiny. Incidentally, "Cupcakea" sounds like some kind of Swedish packet-mix company.

Indeed! It's a statement, a symbol of cow's inbovinity to cow.

...or a moderately-absurd LJ icon. One of the two.
