And in that well-deserved break from Not-Really-National-Write-A-Damned-Report-Day, I've finally, fiiiinally, written that thingy for [livejournal.com profile] shaysdays. My life is now complete, and I could unexist happily. Well, not exactly happily, but less sad about it.

(Except that [livejournal.com profile] goblinpaladin wouldn't ever find out about the dragons. Hmm.)

It's been... too long. It's been nineteen completely different drafts of twenty different stories, none of which are ever, ever, to see the light of day. There is a reason why I do not write sex, and that reason is that I just can't, not without fits of laughter at how monumentally horrific it is. And now, it's over, and it's. Something. I want it to be better, but I also want it to be finished, and I've made my choice on that score.

And it's full of handwaved impossible science, of course. Superluminal time dilation = brain go byebye. For that matter, subluminal time dilation = brain go byebye.

(Bwee! Done!)

Handwavium is a sturdy material, and quite suitable for delicious futurity spaceships.

Mm, handwavium. Tastes like... quantum something!

It's right next to narrativium on the periodic table, in such a way that Nr decays to Hw.

But that depends on the particular isotope of narrativium. Sure, some narrativium just never decays, and it's malleable enough to be adapted into thousands of other shapes - but then, there's also volatile narrativium with a half-life that's measured in minutes.

If only there were a reliable test to determine which is which...

I wouldn't bother hunting for it, because stuck on Roundworld as we are, there's no way to find it. We act as though it exists, and outside of Roundworld it does, but since we're here and have no way of getting to the Discworld where it does work and exist, we've no way of testing it.

Unless we can prove that narrativium, in any form or isotope, does exist here and that there is a way of testing it.

Hi! Unrelated to your post, I just friended you and so as not to seem like a creepy glommer-onner: I stumbled over your journal a bit ago while I hamered on some recoding to flexible squares. I discovered quickly that not only is your journal nicely coded, but you're funny and we have some interests in common (Jim Butcher).

So, hello!

Hi! I don't mind random friendings - see also my userinfo; all my entries are public, and if people want to read my entries on their flists, then I'm quite happy to let them do it.

Also hello!

Oooh... superluminal time dilation would be very cool indeed. Shame I just did a whole subject dedicated to general relativity and why that's impossible, lol. Sounds like a fun thing to write about, though, minus the pain of trying to actually get things written.

Oh, yes. Yes indeed. I knew going in that all things superluminal are impossible. If I were to write more about their 'verse, there'd likely be a scene of:

"Isn't that impossible?"
"Yes."
"And yet..."
"Yes."
"So..."
"I try not to think about it."

I can very much visualise a conversation like that.

On the other hand, one could always posit the use of extra dimensions as a convenient explanatory device.

"How did we do that?"
"Oh, we just phased slightly into a different spatial dimension. Changed the value of c, no biggie."
"...right."

Possibly through a side-effect of Heisenberg Uncertainty in systems with high degrees of relativistic length contraction. Or, alternatively, some kind of quantum trickery that makes vacuum seem more vacuous, with similar effects on c.
