... for I've had eleventy billion and one things to do over the last couple of months. But that, that, dear friends1, is all over. For a little bit. "Why?", I imagine you asking, because this is the Internet and even if you did ask, I couldn't hear it anyway.

The reason is simple: the semester is all over and done with. Next semester I get to buy nice expensive things like AACR2, and then there's more fun learning to be done. Mmm, learning, yay, fun.

But, I'm not here to go on about that. Instead, I'll take you through newsy stuff from the last while in approximate order of importance. With headings, of sorts.

Veronica Mars

Mmm, importance. Let me sum this up with "Squeeeeeeeeeeeeee".2 A squee, as it were, for squeefulness. A squee of- I'll get to the point. VM is back on Australian TV! On Fridays! At 9:30! So not only do we eventually find out who offed Lilly (why, yes, we are that far behind), but we get to see the entirety of each episode.

This is news that placed ahead of...

I aten't dead

And someone even made me a sign to prove it. So, to all the well-wishers, to the people who send email, and the people whose lives just felt immensely empty, I'm here now and I missed all of you too. Especially you4.

In other news...

Terrorism and tourism

This is just a short note that I misheard a radio ad as saying "terrorism: it's everyone's business", which amused me immensely. And incredibly, and astoundingly. Except that it was meant to be about tourism, which doesn't really matter anyway since the Grand High Committee of Forming Committees (otherwise known as the territory government) has decided they don't feel the need to fund tourism campaigns anymore.

On a related note...

Evil Hobbit launches new assault on rights

Which has nothing at all to do with WorkChoices, less to do with offshore warehousing of refugees, and everything to do with his new SexChoices policy. Which is to say, Howard has decided he doesn't like the idea of one little bit of Australia granting the option of same-sex civil unions which, though not marriage5, confer all the rights thereof and are thus Gorramn Shiny™. Or would be, were it not for Howard and company trying to do all they can to slay that law very, very dead.

Well, all they can, except taking it to an actual court. Instead, they'd like to abuse the constitution in all kinds of interesting new ways.

Of course, it's not particularly fair to compare Howard to a Hobbit. If Howard were Frodo, they'd get to Mount Doom, then there'd be a long inquiry into the Fellowship that discovered that no, they didn't know about any ring, they were sure that it had never been mentioned, Gandalf and Elrond and All and Sundry had only talked about it to other people, and they had no idea how Sauron managed to get his hands on the ring. Or, for that matter, why the Orcs were eating wheat from the Shire.

On a related matter - that is, saving the souls of people from things that need no saving of souls...

Church offers Jazzercise

I'm not sure quite what the deal is for this one, except that they have a biiig poster proudly advertising that they, a church, offer Jazzercise. Because, of course, the book doth say,

if thine food causeth thee to gain a few pounds extra, cast away thine excess weight, for verily it is better that thou fittest into smaller dresses, than that thou stay a bit squishy in spots and be cast into Hell.

Why, yes. Mark my words. Starjumps, or the Lake of Fire. It's all up to you.

In conclusion

No theme, but an entry about stuff other than a lack of entries, yay. And there was content, but then I've had many weeks to pick from. Also, VM is back. Wheeeee!
  1. Which is to say, friends, readers, irregular readers, first-time readers, subsequent-time readers, miscellaneous readers, casual netizens, formal netizens, semiformal netizens, ambivalent consumers of text, oddly sentient texts on consumption, lost webheads, followers of links, people who make links people follow, people who redistribute highly followable links, people on this list, people not on this list, ninja, spies, pirates, ninja pirate spies, and possibly even sworn foes. It's just that 'friends' works better in the sentence.
  2. This is a particularly short version of the summary, mostly because the 'eeeeee' bit of the full version would break not just my entries page, not just my friends page, but every page in the whole entire Interwebs. Seriously. My websquee3 would drown out the whole of Slashdot without even trying.
  3. Which, really, sounds a lot like a fannish superpower for Spiderman.
  4. You know who I mean. And if you don't, then I'll entertain myself by reading the rumours which may or may not come into being. Secretly, I'm kinda betting on 'not'.
  5. Blame the constitution for that one.

I would try to offer you some moving advice, having just moved myself, but the only thing that springs to mind is "Don't try and do all your packing on one day." It gets very stressful.

Seconded. Packing in a day is a skill that's strictly for removalists.

The facial expression and alcohol desire in that icon accurately describe how I felt during the move: the rum had already been packed though.

If ever you do it again, remember: the most important things - coffee, alcohol, and such - get packed last, because you want need them first when you're unpacking.

Tea was perfectly accessible at both old house and new (which were only seperated by about 200 yards, which helped). To be fair, while I desired alcohol it probably wouldn't have helped the packing.

It could be useful as an incentive, though.

My main incentive was that we only had the van for one day, so everything had to go in that day.

Also, the bed was one of the last things to be moved, so no packing = no bed in new house = no sleep.

Nah, I'm just setting aside today for my bedroom. Which regrettably has the most packable stuff, since I don't use drawers so much as shelves for my clothes, since the Huz pretty much had laid claim to them before I arrived on the scene. (Something that will be changing in the new house ohyesitwill.)

Also, this is where my computer is, and y'all are tempting me with shiny intarwebs and far-off places. Bastids.

But all the kid's stuff (clothes, toys, sheets, toys, incidentals, toys) is packed already, huzzah. Granted, they've been bored and either drawing on or bouncing off the walls for a week, (The big one's the bouncer, the little one's the artiste) but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

So I'm packing a box, surfing the net. Packing, surfing, packing. My little guy is helping, whcih means any boxes of clothes I unpack will be unfolded piles of stuff and possibly contain cereal bits, but that's okay since he's happy to 'help.'

My move was out of shared-with-friends accomodation, which means that

1) my bedroom contained 90% of everything I owned.

2) I had nowhere to store boxes long-term without putting them in other people's way.

whcih means any boxes of clothes I unpack will be unfolded piles of stuff and possibly contain cereal bits, but that's okay since he's happy to 'help.'

Well, that cereal needed packing too :).
