Three things. Three shall be the number of the things, and the number of the things shall be three.
Or something like that.
Firstly, I'm mildly disturbed by sentences starting with "I'm looking for a book..." This especially holds in situations where I'm saying it in a bookshop, and consequently feeling utterly stupidlike for declaring myself to be looking for a book while in a bookshop. Since the whole searching-for-a-stack-of-paper-glued-along-one-side thing is pretty much a given in a bookshop, this brings me to wonder what other socially-invisible phrasing could be used. This, dear readers, is where you come in. What would you use?
Next, I've learned of the existence of a tea shop! Where they sell tea! Many kinds of tea! Many kinds of tea that smell pretty! Many, many kinds of tea! Camellia sinensipreciousssssesssss that I wantsssssessss! Mmmmmtea.
So, I now have tea with mint and chocolate in. It has much tasty.
Lastly, I have a meme, nicked from
amyrose2021 and
lesslikeyou.

And as for the "I'm looking for a book" suggestion, I just say get on with it. Just tell them what book you're looking for. "I'm looking for The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove. Can you help me?" Although I don't suggest asking for that particular book and then asking if they could help, because what if there really IS a lust lizard. I'm sure you wouldn't be looking for it.
You get the point.

Date: 2006-03-24 10:54 am (UTC)My HTML should be 1337 this time
Date: 2006-03-24 05:24 am (UTC)Nothing beats the classic wit of this one.
And, I have to say, "I'm looking for a book," isn't a bad opener for a sentence in a bookstore as long as you add descriptors to that initial noun. Like, would you feel bad about going into that tea store and saying "I'm looking for some tea that'll help me sleep at night,"?
But, if you're feeling awful, why don't you just say "I'm looking for something that/about/written by X/Y/Z." The "something" is contextually informed.
Your HTML has much 1337

Date: 2006-03-24 05:45 am (UTC)It has served me well.
Do you know the author or title or genre of the book? Today I was bookshopping, and I suddenly remembered a book recommendation, only I couldn't remember the author. I was about to go up to the counter and ask "Do you have [title]?" (only with more "hi"s and "yeah"s and "um"s), but then I spotted it on the shelves. *whew!*
"I'm looking for [blah]" or "Do you know if you have [dinglehicky]?" also work.
Conversely, I have a perverse reluctance to ask directions in a bookshop. I spent about half an hour wandering Books Kinokuniya trying to find the comic books section (and another fifteen minutes trying to figure out the shelving system). Ye gods, that place is enormous. And twisty. It has nooks!
