twenty-five years after the murder of John Lennon by Mark David Chapman*, who then read The Catcher In The Rye**.

While there's probably no shortage of stories - like his 1960s prediction of being shot by "some loony" - the one I intend to post has only a tangential relation to him. And was amusing at the time.

We set the scene about six months ago; I happen to be paying a brief visit to my parents. There's a knock at the door, by men in suits brandishing bibles with intent. Greetings are exchanged, pleasantries, a brief comment on the weather, and then...

Men at Door: "We're here to tell you about the greatest man who ever lived."
Mother: "John Lennon was shot in 1980."
Men at Door: *Stare in confusion*
Mother: *Closes door*

In other news, my neighbour has decided that the twenty-fifth anniversary of John Lennon's death is appropriately remembered by - loudly - playing a particularly irksome song about so-called 'lady lumps', lovely or otherwise. There's just no escape from it.

* It's the 8th here.
