Sorry, you're not on your own if you're on a Mac: use Ctrl+X (no shift required, as cut is command-X). This has been tested on a first generation black MacBook running OS X v. 10.5.1 just about a minute ago at my present location (read: I did it just now on my computer, which happens to be a Mac).
And for some reason, I don't feel guilty at all about running Darwin.
