I think I've made my closest icon ever to hitting the 40k limit. There's a whole eleven bytes left before it's exactly 40k. To put this in perspective, eleven bytes is exactly enough space to store 'elevenbytes'. For that particular feat, I'm rather a bit happier with the other one. Of course, the identities of these icons are strictly hidden.

In other news, Max Barry's careful marketing experiment seems to have worked. Today, I bought myself a copy of Jennifer Government, something I'd neglected to mention in the earlier post, and tonight it is finished. I rather enjoyed it; it makes for quite an intriguing tale of 'Capitalizm' gone mad.

it wouldn't be disqualified. I don't care if you use the icons you make - they are yours, after all.

I never quite understood the whole "don't use it until the challenge is over" thing. If you credit it to yourself with the community name it's like advertising, yes?

If you use it yourself, it may distort voting if people pick your icon because they like you. I, personally, just vote for icons I like.

I think that _potkettleblack is rather more at risk of that kind of thing, though, since all the icons are linked from the maker's own image hosting. I much prefer your choice to gather them into a community photobucket, though I imagine it's more so that the comm has a fairly complete 'record' of icons that folk have entered.

Ah, yes. I used to have the entries set up so's the entry was a new post. I didn't really have a problem with people voting cuz they liked me/others though. At least that I'm aware of. But I changed it just in case.

That's how it's done in [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], and it works out well - plus it helps me to have these pretty icons show up in my friends list - it's sort of like an inspiration to be better.

*nods* Their fifth rule is lovely.

It does somewhat give later posters an advantage, since they can see what kind of direction other people have taken for their icons. Of course, that helps keep the sameness down, which is definitely a Good Thing™. There are certain comms where I'd like to see more variation and inspiration in icons, complete with different approaches to different themes and some variety in weekly entries.

I don't much like the idea of picking a best icon out of twenty icons that all look roughly the same; I'd rather reward inspired, creative approaches to the theme over standardised prettiness - after all, in the lj-wild, it's the different, creative icons that get all the love.
