So, I just spent about an hour coding a function to display tag lists on LiveJournal month pages.

That's not exactly how it went, though.

It took about a minute to make up a rough design, seven minutes to write the function, another five to make sure I hadn't made stupid programming mistakes (typos in variable names, that kind of thing, and then two more to fix other stupid programming mistakes (a missed parenthesis and a forgotten semicolon, of course).

So, fifteen minutes. Neat, tidy, shiny S2 code. Decoupled, cohesive - all the good things.

Except... it didn't work.

So, I spent the next fifteen minutes checking on various places the error could be and... the tags were mysteriously failing to show up.

Ten minutes of various hacks? No dice. So, the next trick was to Google it.

And, apparently, you simply can't get entry tags on archive pages. It just doesn't bother fetching them, and there's two more minutes gone, followed swiftly by another 11 or so trying to find a hack.

And then, the rest of the hour was spent trying to post a decently formatted comment with the code in it, and the explanation of why it didn't work. Even then, I've just noticed that version lacks a semicolon, but I've no particular desire to spam the poor poster any futher.

Which means that I've spent as much time trying to make a proof-of-concept for some random in an S2 comm as I have writing actual code for my eventual new layout. I'm sure that says something, but I haven't a clue what it is, or even whether it's good or bad.
