So, the file extension hack didn't work. They don't allow .bmp files, and UAs (pron. browsers) don't parse other image formats as plain text. My .css files (the one for my journal, and the one for cookielist) are now on a host that limits bandwidth. After 200MB of stylesheets, there's no more.

Happily, the stylesheets are fairly small - mine is just over 1K, and the other is less than half that. These particularly small stylesheets are made possible by sorting out most of the CSS though the customise layout page, and then using @import to use the styles generated by LJ. My sheets are basically just the import directives, and a bit of override stuff.

My next round of playing with layouts will probably be comms_anon, before I look for a way of getting more members. The problem with that is that I'm a little lacking in inspiration for it. If you have a suggestion, then I'd love to hear it.

As far as comms_anon goes, if we can come up with a mock 12-step program for it, then maybe you could do something with that for the background of the layout.

AA twelve steps.

1. We admitted that we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all of our affairs.

First shot:

1. We admitted that we were powerless over personal journals — that our flists had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a Journal for more than one could restore us from sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our posts and our flists over to the care of Mods as we understood Them.
4. Made a searching and fearless list of interests for ourselves.
5. Admitted to Mods, to ourselves and to other LJers the exact nature of our entries.
6. Were entirely ready to have Mods remove all defective entries.
7. Humbly asked Them to give us posting access.
8. Made a list of all persons we had flamed, and became willing to make a mockery of them all.
9. Made a direct mockery of such people wherever possible, except when to do so would break rules or upset others.
10. Continued to list personal interests and when we were wrong promptly edited it.
11. Sought through comment notification to improve our conscious contact with Mods, as we understood Them, asking only for knowledge of Their will for the comms and the power to carry that out.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to LJers, and to practice these principles in all of our affairs.

It could go in the userinfo... icons would be good, but then icons are always good... although this still doesn't help with the layout problem, does it?

Not a scrap, but it was fun.

Maybe for the background, we could use an image made out of comm names (in their typical metaicons style). It's easy to get it to tile, should be fairly compact, and could look fairly pretty.

That would probably work, yes. I've been racking my brains over this one, and even though I spent two out of six-point-five hours at work today doing absolutely nothing (according to the computer), I still got nuthin'.
