It's come to my attention that it's now spring, and there's magpies looking to nest in the tree out the front. Right outside the door. This is going to be... interesting.

Continuing this theme of change in my little corner of the world, a shrubbery from near a bus stop near home has somehow vanished. It looks like the Kinghts Who Say Ecky-ecky-ecky-ecky p'kang-zoop-boing! Goodem-zoo-owli-zhiv got their second shrubbery after all.

And I got a copy of Across the Wall today, because I just randomly saw it in a bookshop and pounced. And got a slightly unnerved stare from their employee, who doesn't seem to be fond of tall people who dive into the sci-fi section and come out all fangirl-bouncy seconds later. Yay for Mr Nix.

Ooh, you're tall? I didn't know that.

I am. We're talking a bit over 6', here, where 'a bit' is slightly more than an inch, and 'slightly more' is a fuzzy non-zero unit of measure which means "And that's exact enough for me".

I might add that there's really no way I can measure more precisely, and people are different heights at different times of day.

And this is me, being totally thrown by the fact that you're in the Southern Hemisphere....

I am moving there next year, and I think the Season Confusion is going to kill me.

No yay.

What you get in Spring is the male magpies' reproductive organs increasing to something like four times their normal size. This comes with an increase in hormone levels, making for aggressive and territorial magpies. Aggressive and territorial magpies tend to attack things that aren't actually threatening them, either on general principle or because the extra weight overbalances them and flying at peoples' heads is just a way of pulling out of a dangerous fall. This comes with pointy beaks that leave wounds that have an astoundingly high chance of getting infected.

Still yay for magpies!

I used to do that with blue jays in my first house, but now we only get them every once in a while. :(

If you're moving into spring, that means I should be moving into autumn.

I really wish somebody would tell the weather here that little fact.

Ah, another pouncer! I saw Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell in paperback at Borders last week, snatched a copy from the table, kissed it, and declared it my precious. The salespeople didn't blink, but then, they know me. *grins*

That does seem to make a difference. If there's a dedicated bookgeek working there, that also seems to help.

I did something like that with the Players Handbook. Every time I went into B&N or B.Dalton they were sold out.

I reread Maskerade today speaking of Pterry, just because there's an exchange between the witches and the ticket-seller that was nagging at my mind, about swapping tickets, which given my job was appropriate. I need to note the quote down and possibly do something amusing and icon-shaped with it.

I'm only up to Pyramids so far, so your icon will probably be opaque for a while but well worth the wait.

You'll probably be up to Maskerade by the time I get round to actually making the icon.

Pyramids was one of the first Pterry books I read, along with Small Gods, which may go a long way towards explaining why I have strange religious views and also a deep fondness for turtles. I read them out of order because my parents had a few random hardcovers; when I hit high school I started the series from the beginning and then began building our own collection up, with the end result that when I move out, there's going to be a custody battle over the bookshelf.
