I've decided you have to read the Keys to the Kingdom series. And the Old Kingdom trilogy, for Garth Nix is all kinds of brilliance and the fandom is small enough that you needn't panic about there being OMG other people in it and there's a pretty pretty box with the Old Kingdom books in.
