In this instance, cos(x) cannot be zero; x is defined before it's used anywhere that it might otherwise break things. It's somewhat more valid to infer that if cos(x) is, in fact, equal to (1 - sin²(x))/cos(x), then x cannot be a value for which cos(x) returns zero.
