It's great the way things go. Decided to visit my old town for a week and a half, and it's like the whole place is in palliative care. Even now, I'm fighting with a public internet thingy that lacks so much as a working end key.

Grr.

The town was once merely static, but now seems to be degrading. New houses pop up at roughly the same rate as jobs disappear, while the council bicker over the relative merits of decentralised retail. Even my very favourite Chinese restaurant has gone downhill, seeing fit to serve sate cardboard in place of the excellent food they once had.

Not to comment on the service.

Or the use of Japanese chopsticks in a Chinese restaurant. Very PC, but not the brightest move.

About the best thing about coming here is the people, but even they seem to be falling apart. Once vibrant and happy, they seem to be the living face of a general slide into anonymity and despair. The few who escape it are the naturally happy and the out-of-town visitors.

This I'd noticed on the first couple of days, chalking it up to overfond memories - but, taking a look at it with fresh eyes today, I can't wait to go home.
