After, well, far too long, the entry you've all been waiting for: the quiz!post of DOOM. (May not involve actual doom.) Plus, getting this out of the way means I might start posting actual content again.

No, really.

So, quiz!post. This one has 50 questions, and a maximum of 190 points. No minimum score, though some of the questions are very easy, and I'll be horribly disappointed if some of you don't get some of them.

Comments are screened, because it just works better that way.

Part One - Parts of songs; one point each for artist, title and next line, and a bonus point for all three.
1-20 )
Part Two - First lines; one point each for artist, title, and next line, with a bonus point for all three.
21-35 )
Part Three - Lines with titles in; one point each for artist, title, and next line, and a bonus point for all three.
36-45 )
Part Four - Lost in translation (though somewhat less lost than the last time I used this game); one point for title, one point for artist.
46-50 )

Guess early, guess often. And remember: the winner won't actually get Numfar doing the dance of joy.
No, really. It's the end of the quiz. I don't even have a flimsy epilogue to write on the end of it, so I'll just stick to the important things. So!

The Answers

The unguessed ones are in bold, with some extra lines added for amusement value (typically to the end of the verse/chorus/coda/whatever). I may or may not post complete lyrics and/or links for those people are interested in; if there's something you may or may not be interested in investigating further, tell me in a comment.

First, the scores:

I have nothing particularly enlightening to add here, save that 49 is, in fact, Ashes to Ashes. If I hear a multitude of loud, banging noises, I'll assume it's a sudden convergence of heads and desks.

Anyway... the songs. The ten with added lines are in bold, and encouragement is... well, probably not so useful now. If no-one gets any today, or if you all want the answers, I might make this the last day of the memequiz.

I'm surprised a few of these have lasted as long as they have, and I'm surprised that others were picked up as quickly as they were.

I expected, for example, to post more of Jillian, while on the other hand I'm surprised 4 and 49 are still there. Walk the Dinosaur went about as quickly as I expected it to, and for a while The Ballad of Serenity looked like it had a scary chance of having its second line posted.

Anyway... the songs. The 14 with added lines are in bold - so if you start playing now, you've kind of maybe got a shot at equal second. Web cheating is, needless to stay, still (a) evil, and (b) Not Allowed.

I'd document the wild guesses here, but I'd rather use them to feed the normal post (and link folk to here, oh how very devious...)

And now, the songs. The 28 with added lines are in bold - which means there's still enough left that anyone could win. Even you! (maybe you, maybe you, maybe even you, aaand there's a bonus point for anyone who can name that reference!)

Again, cut for length )
I have something of a tradition of picking arbitrary milestones and posting music quizzes for them, mostly based on picking interesting post numbers and using those.

This is post 464, which was an accident - I wanted it to be post 463, which is the ninetieth prime number, which means... absolutely nothing to anyone, so nearly as I can tell, hence: arbitrary. So, this is an out-of-order post 463.

And it means I don't have to convince myself to wait to do the quiz!meme, so, yay.

This one's fairly straightforward - it's the first lines, and the comments are screened, so guess any you think you might know. I'll add a line every day for the ones that aren't guessed, and keep scores, and eventually they'll all be guessed (or out of lines), and someone will win. Yay!

[Poll #1026399]

Remember that I write poll entries as though they're responses that you'd say to me, even if they're probably nothing close to what you'd actually say. Also, keep in mind that there's sixty songs under the cut.

So! As usual, title and artist (or source, for some), one point for each one you get right.

Cut for length )

And there they all are. Go forth and guess. Again, comments are screened, so guess at anything that looks familiar.

EDIT: Point of interest: the poll title was supposed to be "hey, look, I'm being indecisive!"; the apostrophe broke it.
Firstly, twelve of River! And Simon's still not talking to Miranda.

It occurs to me that I may get a little two excited about some things. At least one of my flistees has just posted her thousandth entry, while another thinks he'll get to 1000 before the year's out. This, on its own, seems like an unexceptional little detail. My point is that they barely seem to notice it - it's a matter of "1000 entries! Yey!"

So, you might wonder, where am I going with this? Well, dear readers, it seems that I do indeed get slightly overexcited. Just look a couple of days back, to me going "OMGYAY! 200 POSTS! LET'S PLAY A GAAAME!" If tradition's anything to go by, it'll happen for 250 posts, too. And 300. And 350. And I'll probably bounce up and down and overdose on excitement for 500 posts while everyone else in the whole entire universe is busily looking the other way and saying "2000 entries. Meh."

Maybe I'm doing this whole journal thing wrong, and need to develop some stylish indifference.

...

Bah. Stylish indifference just isn't my thing.

Anyway! As you may have guessed, the aforementioned two hundredth entry contained a game. A game that looks suspiciously like a music!quiz. According to the poll I took yesterday, an overwhelming majority of people who actually answered the question wanted to know what the other three answers were. So!

Cut for answers... )

Moving on to news from today, Montie went for a visit to the vet seeing as how he's starting to get on in years and he's a bit slow in the mornings. He's gained about half a kilogram since his last visit, and is in very good health. The vet said, quote, "His heart sounds good between growls." His cataracts aren't horribly bad, either; this is partly owing to poodles getting different cataracts to other dogs, and means that things only get fuzzy for him up close. Also, he needs slightly more calories in his diet, but that's easily done.

He took a bit of a liking to a German Shepherd on the way out. It may have helped that she was on the other side of the room. :)

Post 200!

Which means another Arbitrary Milestone, which means another one of these music!quiz thingies.

Which means I needed to pick some kind of theme, which - this time - is questions that fit each of the other four themes.

[Insert generic onomatopoeia of excitement]

Cut for Quiz. Whee! )

Post 150

Sep. 18th, 2005 02:30 am
Well. 150 posts. It was bound to happen eventually, and means there's now 150 good bits of evidence that I have way too much time on my hands.

Setting a dangerous precedent, I'm using this as an opportunity for a music quiz... of sorts. No prizes for the right answer - be as weird as you want. I want to see exactly how weird a song can get by optionally replacing every second line with a line from another song.

So, click, play, have fun.

[Poll #572309]
Yay! I celebrate! This number is significant, for two reasons. One is because people don't typically think in hexadecimal (if we did, I'd have to wait for entry #226), and the other is that people like the number 100. Even in octal, but I missed 64. So, yes. 100. Rejoice!

In memory of this special occasion, I'm going to do two things. The first will be my fourth ever music!quiz. The second will be my first ever use of tags, which I may just feel the need to add to all my previous posts, if only for my own convenience when looking for entries. But that's not the interesting bit, for I have said music!quiz.

The idea behind this one? Simple, really. In all the other ones, I've had to carefully avoid lines that have the song title in them. Enough!, I says. What we have here is lines snipped from songs, that include the title cunningly replaced with some number of underscores. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to tell me the title and the artist (or where the song's been snipped from).

And now: the Songs! )

Today's LJ headline? Book released. Two ships found safe in sheltered harbour of canon. Some ships tossed about on stormy seas in the teacups of fandom. Other ships report tossing, no storms.

And now I'm off to bed. Play nice.
Nicked from [livejournal.com profile] ryttu3k, tweaked to suit my eeeevil purposes. Please note, there's two unsolved songs in this one, and there's four of these songs left.

The original instructions were these:
Get playlist. Shuffle playlist. Play thirty songs. Post first lines. Get flist to guess songs and artists. Rinse. Repeat.

My monstrously warped version has forty songs. The first twenty use the first line, the second twenty use a line from anywhere in the song (which may include the start). Your mission, once you choose to accept it, is to name the artist and the title, and post the next line. Or post bits and pieces, and you can share credit. If you want to 'sing' the whole thing in the comments, I don't mind. Sample line from solved ones shown in square brackets [].

Cut, 'cause I'm nice like that. )
Just for a bit of fun, the following is a collection of misheard lyrics. What I'd like you to do is comment with the title, artist and the correct line for each of them. After the mishap that was the translated lyrics meme, this is all just filtered through the somewhat lacking ears of the average listener. The ten songs are all from my Winamp playlist, if you're after special inspiration to play with your own flist.
  1. Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] fireyfox)
Misheard: Slow-talkin' Walter, the fire-engine guy
Original: Smoke on the water, fire in the sky

  2. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2 (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] captainsblog)
Misheard: I like wine and clear fountains/But I really like lemon peels
Original: I have climbed the highest mountains/I have run through the fields.

  3. Space Oddity - David Bowie (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] fireyfox)
Misheard: Clown control to Mao Tse Tung
Original: Ground Control to Major Tom

  4. Breathless - The Corrs (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] etymological)
Misheard: Go home, go home, but leave me breakfast
Original: Go on, go on, come on, leave me breathless

  5. Magic Carpet Ride - Steppenwolf (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] crackedwraith)
Misheard: On a magic coffee grinder
Original: On a magic carpet ride

  6. ...And Justice For All - Metallica (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] mrpyro)
Misheard: All the dust is painted green, money talkin'
Original: Halls of justice painted green, money talking

  7. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] fireyfox)
Misheard: There's a wino down the road
Original: As we wind on down the road

  8. Piano Man - Billy Joel (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] fireyfox)
Misheard: And the piano, it sounds like a carnivore.
Original: And the piano, it sounds like a carnival

  9. Suffragette City - David Bowie (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] whobunkyboo)
Misheard: Down in Chocolate Chip City
Original: I'm back from Suffragette City

  10. Beautiful Day - U2 (guessed by [livejournal.com profile] etymological)
Misheard: It's a beautiful day / The skys full of felines
Original: It's a beautiful day / The sky falls, you feel like

Who'd ever have guessed? This one's been swiped from [livejournal.com profile] ryttu3k.

First, the instructions:

  1. Pick five songs that most people on your friends list would know.

  2. Select lyrics up to, but no more than, 150 words from each.

  3. Go to Babelfish ( http://babelfish.altavista.com/tr ).

  4. Translate:
    • From English to German

    • From German to French

    • From French to Portuguese

    • From Portuguese to English

  5. Post the results, and ask people to figure out what the songs are.
The songs! )

And the icon? The thought amused me far too much to just let slip.
